Bad is Here 05:28
When they told me to come along, I smiled in double time. Their names were so outstanding, That I’d do anything. All the tears I cried Are under the bed for me to hide. And if I take another step inside, The steps I took before are denied. Now every day I go along, I may smile, but it’s not mine. Now my life is only flying, And I’ll try anything. All the tears I cried Are under the bed for me to hide. And if I take another step inside, The steps I took before are denied.

What can you show to a man, What can you put in his hand? The same thing you showed to me Will make him see. It’s a state of miscommunication, Tuned into a different station. Out of range and out of bounds, No more range and no more sound. In his mouth he cannot taste, All his hatred and disgrace. The same meal you shared with me, Will make him see. Look and see the new condition, It’s a deadly apparition. Out of range and out of bounds, No more range and no more sound.

Royal Blues 05:14
When I’m loving you, baby It’s like the world stands still. You captivate my soul, babe- You take away my free will. Your beauty entices me. Your sweet whisper keeps me ‘round. Your emotion intrigues me- The way you talk without a sound I free myself from your spell, But you’re all I’m dreaming of. Looks like I’m really hooked on love. Time goes by baby, But you always stay the same. Your love’s still my master, And I’m still your slave. I free myself from your spell, But you’re all I’m dreaming of. Looks like I’m really hooked on love. Get away from me, girl. Just walk away. Cause hooked on your love Is where I’ll always stay. Are you from the devil, Or did you come from above? Looks like I’m really hooked on love.

Green Pillar 01:46
Trees they don’t wither Without help from outside. Stop and see, what will be - soon. Never again, free leaf Falling from above. Stop and see, what will be - soon. And it’s so tall, You can’t bring it down To the ground. Stop and see, what will be - soon.

From the day I was born, I've always been what I am. As the train rambles on, I look and see all I can. In the heart, there’s the soul, In the soul, there’s the mind. If you live by the sword, There’s one thing that you’ll find. ‘Round and ‘round and ‘round she goes. Together we all spin. The king flees, the king falls, Together we all win. So much has been going on Baby where you been? The king flees, the king falls, Together we all win. As you sit back and think about it, With your head in your hands. How nice it’d finally be To see all those beautiful lands. Life is but a song that is never-ending. Love is but an unknown message someone is sending. ‘Round and ‘round and ‘round she goes. Together we all spin. The king flees, the king falls, Together we all win. So much has been going on Baby where you been? The king flees, the king falls, Together we all win.

Uncle Jack 04:43
A day goes by – sun, then moon. A day goes by – March, then June. A day comes, a day goes. Where it stops, nobody knows. A storm will arise, the rain will fall Over the streets, and unto us all. A baby cries, wipe it’s eyes. Take it to Mass, and sit by the alter. Glory forever, has to involve her she implies. A day comes, a day goes. Where it stops, nobody knows. A storm will arise, the rain will fall Over the streets, and unto us all. Uncover the bareness of the truth, my friend. The color of death is black, so step back. A day comes, a day goes. Where it stops, nobody knows. A storm will arise, the rain will fall Over the streets, and unto us all. Their elegant ways of saying goodbye To embrace his flag, and look to his sky.

Me Face 05:13
I can’t see where I’m coming from, Cause I've been around myself entirely too long. All my troubles seem here to stay, I close my eyes and fade away. But I try... Time will tell where she stands, And I face the new day with nothing to gain. As I walk, I see daylight. In the back of my eyes, my veins so tight. And all I've been told is nothing new. It’s nothing new to me or you. But I try... Time will tell where she stands, And I face the new day with nothing to gain.

When Pandora found her box, She locked us all in a paradox. But still we carry on – to another dawn. What was inside, it plagues us now. It still remains a mystery how Our poor souls carry on to another dawn. What we’re searching for, no one sees. Uncontrollable realities. Why we’re searching, no one agrees. Uncontrollable destinies. Living in search, day after day - What must be found so far away. But still we carry on – to another dawn. Tomorrow’s dream, yesterday’s pain Tomorrow’s sun, yesterday’s rain. But still we carry on – to another dawn. What we’re searching for, no one sees. Uncontrollable realities. Why we’re searching, no one agrees. Uncontrollable destinies.

The river flows to your eyes. The one and only, you and I. A kiss of death – kiss me now. I can’t sleep, there’s no way out. Our love, like a stone - cold and hard. Our love, like a thought only there for a while. I need you today, I need you tomorrow, Without your blue eyes, I’m swimming in sorrow. This change in pace, how I love your face. This change in pace, how I hate your face. Will you make up your mind, and let me know? Our love, like a stone - cold and hard. Our love, like a thought only there for a while. I need you today, I need you tomorrow, Without your blue eyes, I’m swimming in sorrow. Our presence is no crime, Cause crime is nothing but wasted time. Just a mystical line – behind. Our love, like a stone - cold and hard. Our love, like a thought only there for a while. I need you today, I need you tomorrow, Without your blue eyes, I’m swimming in sorrow.

Is it in my mind, or just reality? Is it in your soul, or just my fantasy? Only two can tell, in one state of grace. Blue-diamond pearls reflect your face. I close my eyes to slip away. Am I going to die in a fearful state? Only two can tell – single the day.

about

We began recording The Color Of in the fall of 1992 on 10/25/92. "King Flees, King Falls" was the first song recorded, which we subsequently re-tracked. The original multi-track for the first version still exists in the archives, so perhaps we can remix for a future giveaway. Our recollection is that we recut the song because the tracks had a buzz which we didn't detect during tracking. "Royal Blues" was the oldest song in the batch, written and rehearsed in the spring of 1991. "King Flees, King Falls" was also written spring of 1991, but not rehearsed until over a year later.

We tracked through the winter of 1992 and wrapped in the spring of 1993. "Bad Is Here" and "Bye, Bye Little Person" were the last songs recorded on Good Friday (4/9/93). All tracking was done at Steve’s Mom's house in her garage, with the exception of "Green Pillar" and "Tomorrow's Sun" which were recorded at Steve’s Dad's in Media, Pa. Several guitar solos like "King Flees, King Falls" and "Throwing Stones" were tracked at Steve’s Dad's as well.

We tracked basics in the garage at show volume with minimal baffling. Leavy's drums were in the latter quarter of the garage near the door, with Steve’s amp in one corner and Kevin’s amp in another. O’Brien’s bass amp was in the center rear of the room next to a bunch of shelving. The mixer was located in the garage on a shelf. In order to get the drum and bass balance on track 1 (in mono) we had to record them, then listen back and make adjustments before committing to the balance.

We recorded on a Tascam 424 four track analog cassette recorder, using all 4 tracks without bouncing. We used a Peavey Unity 2000 16 channel mixer to submix the drum mics and bass to track 1 in mono on the recorder. Track 2 was Kevin’s guitar, track 3 was Steve’s guitar, and track 4 was Snyder's vocal and miscellaneous overdubs. We used a cheap practice guitar amp with one 8" speaker for monitoring in mono. We recorded all the basic tracks live without headphones.

We used Shure SM57 and SM58 mics for the whole record. No condenser mics or DIs were used. Kick drum had an SM58, and we had several SM57s around the kit. They are most definitely out of phase. We used an SM58 on the bass amp, and SM57s on guitars. The vocals were recorded with SM58s and no compression. Multiple vocal parts were cut live to track 4, usually in a bathroom. All of the acoustic guitars were recorded with SM57s as well.

Mixing was done in May 1993 to a Sony consumer DAT machine at 16 bit / 48 kHz. We used Sony headphones for monitoring. We used guitar pedals as parallel effects, including the Ibanez PUE 5 and the SF10 Swell Flanger (which is most prevalent on the "Uncle Jack" outro drums). There is no reverb anywhere on the record.

For the new 2013 digital reissue, Steve imported the original DAT mixes into Pro Tools and then ran those mixes through a 1991 Solid State Logic FX G384 stereo compressor, using iZ ADA II converters for D/A and A/D conversion. We then sent both the raw and compressed mixes to Graham Goldman at Masterdisk in Brooklyn, NY for mastering.
